Martha Stewart has been looked to for home and lifestyle advice for decades; now her advisement turns to CBD. Stewart has signed on with Canadian cannabis conglomerate Canopy Growth as an advisor to help create, develop, and promote CBD products for humans and pets, reports Variety. The move marks Stewart’s first foray into the cannabis industry and positions her as perhaps the biggest mainstream face of CBD.
“I am delighted to establish this partnership with Canopy Growth and share with them the knowledge I have gained after years of experience in the subject of living,” Stewart commented. “I’m especially looking forward to our first collaboration together, which will offer sensible [CBD] products for people’s beloved pets.”
Last year Canopy made headlines after receiving a multi-billion dollar investment from Constellation Brands, the parent company of beer, wine, and spirit brands such as Corona, Modelo, Ballast Point, Pacifico, Ruffino, Robert Mondavi, and SVEDKA vodka. The timing of the deal, having just followed Canada’s nationwide legalization paired with fast gaining momentum towards legalization in the United States, led many to believe that Constellation was positioning themselves as the first major spirits conglomerate to capitalize on the popularity of CBD infused beverages.
The move marks Stewart’s first foray into the cannabis space. Stewart told The Hollywood Reporter that several companies had approached her about lending her name and authority to such products as CBD infused topicals and edibles for people and pets. A renown animal lover and advocate, Stewart spoke about her belief in the wellness benefits of CBD.
“I’ve been asked to design recipes and even ointments, healthy ointments for humans as well as for animals like cats and dogs. I’ve had companies in my office bringing in very interesting ointments, rubs and massage creams. I totally believe in that as a supplement to everyday good living.”
Canopy Growth CEO Bruce Linton spoke about the recognition having a celebrity of Stewart’s tenure and experience brings to the line of pet products that will be the first collaboration produced between the cannabis giant and Stewart.
“As soon as you hear the name Martha, you know exactly who we’re talking about. I think it’s a starting spot that was comfortable for everyone involved. We have the science and she’s a lifelong dog, horse, animal person. [CBD] just seemed like a really balanced and suitable starting point.”
In that Hollywood Reporter interview, Stewart remarked that she had been introduced to the potential healing power of CBD while hosting a small get together at her house in Bedford, New York. As her guests made their way through Stewart’s garden a rock fell on her toe causing a mildly painful injury. One of her guests ran to his car to bring back a bottle of CBD-infused ointment. After using the ointment her toe for only two days Stewart marveled at her speedy recovery.
“I thought it was broken. I must tell you, my toe got better within two days. The nail never even turned black or fell off. I think it all had to do with this fantastic ointment that he gave me.”
That guest? None other than rap king Snoop Dogg, with whom Stewart had become close friends after the two appeared on the Comedy Central Roast of Justin Bieber. In fact, it would be Snoop, already a partner with Canopy Growth in his own Leafs by Snoop cannabis line and Stewart’s co-host on the VH1 cooking and lifestyle Show “Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party,” who would email Linton to personally recommend the company reach out to Stewart.
“She is so thoughtful about how things tie together,” raved Linton to CNBC. “I was probably more excited to meet Martha than I think almost any other celebrity I’ve been introduced to. Martha is one of a kind and I am so excited to be able to work alongside this icon to sharpen our CBD product offerings.”
